Art in the Nineteenth Century

The content includes notes and comments on paintings from Europe and the USA during the nineteeth century. The emphasis is not on style, technique nor on a simple appreciation of the work, but on the background to the picture: the life of the artist, the circumstances of its execution, the conditions of the time, the models, the scenes, in fact anything which interests me.

The posts are often short, since they are not intended to be anything more than an invitaion to the reader to look further.

By the way, the portrait of Berthe Morisot by Edouard Manet, which I first saw in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 2015, was where it all began.
